Obituary of Robert Edward Sherrill

Reverend Robert E. Sherrill, 87, of Bryson City went home to be with the Lord Friday, September 2, 2016. A native of Swain County, he was the son of the late Munday Alexander and Ethel Louise Wilson Sherrill and was raised by his late grandparents, Rev. Joseph and Sarah Wilson. He graduated from Swain High School in 1947. He was a retired Air Force veteran having served in the Korean and Vietnam Wars and received the Bronze Star as well as numerous awards. He was a Southern Baptist minister for 35 years. He was a loving husband and father. He was preceded in death by his brother, Jack Wilson Sherrill. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Mary Leah Sherrill; five children, Robert W. Sherrill (Bonnie), William E. Sherrill (Lisa), Thomas M. Sherrill (Teresa), Teresa S. Jefferson (Craig), Joseph H. Sherrill (Tracy); 16 grandchildren, Jennifer, Bobby, Jordan, Ian, Jonathan, David, Cody, Thomas, Kelly, Becca, Sara, Misha, Mary, Michael, Adam, and Leah; and 11 great grandchildren. He was a beloved friend to many relatives and former church members. Funeral services will be held at 4:00 pm Sunday at Harmony Baptist Church of which he was a member. Rev. Tony Cochran will officiate with burial in the Bryson City Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 pm Sunday at the church.
