Lois Groth passed away Wednesday, March 14, 2012.
She was the daughter of the late Herbert and Frieda Groth and was born in Rochester, New York on January 31, 1928.
Lois graduated from the University of Rochester with a BS degree in elementary education in 1956. In 1958, she was awarded the EDM degree from the University of Rochester..
She began teaching first grade in the Greece Central School District, NY. She was awarded a Scholarship to attend the University of Illinois from the state of New York after which she began teaching in the Learning Disabilities Field.
Upon moving to Florida, she taught at the Vanguard School in Ft. Lauderdale until transferring to the Broward County School System. In June, 1990, she retired from the Broward County Schools as an Exceptional Student Specialist.
Being a member of a church was very important and while in Fort Lauderdale, she was a member of Faith United Church of Christ where she taught Sunday School and was a member of the session.
She was initiated into The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International Beta Alpha chapter on September 19, 1981 in Florida and transferring to Alpha Iota Chapter in North Carolina.
Lois moved permanently to Bryson City upon retirement after having been a summer resident since 1972.
She was an advocate for many children upon becoming a Guardian ad Litem in 1992. Lois joined the Bryson City Presbyterian Church and became very active in the Presbyterian Women at her home church and with the Western Carolina Presbytery. She received an Honorary Life Membership in Presbyterian Women. Lois was an Elder at the Presbyterian Church having served at Clerk of the Session.
Upon graduating from high school, Lois began teaching Sunday School at her home church in Rochester, Ft. Lauderdale, and the Bryson City Church. Allow that she never had any children on her own, she was Miss Lois to all those many she touched. Since she moved to Bryson City, she received many awards for her Volunteer Service to the children and adults of North Carolina although she didn't think she deserved them.
She is survived by many relatives and friends.
