Obituary of Leona Mae Lindsay

Leona Walls Lindsay Born on February 9, 1920, in Swain County, Mrs. Lindsay was the daughter of Garland and Bertha (Southards) Walls and "Sis" to brothers Leo, Arvil and Dred all of whom served their country during World War II. Leona's husband, Gordon C. Lindsay, also served during World War II; she delighted her friends and family with stories of their adventures during this time. After the war, the couple lived in Gastonia, where their three children were born, before moving back "to the mountains" and building a home on Wesser Creek. Mr. Lindsay's employment then led the family to spend several years in California. Upon returning to Swain County, Mrs. Lindsay began working outside the home, her last job at Heritage Quilts where she worked for almost 25 years. After Mr. Lindsay's death in 1988, Mrs. Lindsay remained active and independent for the next 20 years. Throughout their lives Gordon and Leona exemplified those individuals whom Tom Brokow called "The Greatest Generation" in his book by that title. Mrs. Lindsay was seldom idle. She was an immaculate housekeeper, an excellent seamstress, a wonderful cook, and often a caretaker. She grew beautiful gardens, and many of the vegetables became part of her bountiful Sunday dinners. In addition to her gardening, she enjoyed her pet dogs, reading, assembling puzzles, and playing cards. In earlier years as a member of Nantahala Baptist Church, she served in various positions: Sunday school teacher, church treasurer, Training Union director, and member of a singing group. Mrs. Lindsay is survived by family members who loved, respected, and admired her: children, Mary L. Stiles of Wesser Creek-Bryson City; Peggy L. Curtis of Murphy; and Michael G. Lindsay of Euchella-Bryson City; daughter-in-law Debora F. Lindsay and son-in law W. Gil Crouch. She was "Granny" to Lindsay Curtis Hall and husband Jeremy, to Kim Curtis Allison and husband Adam, Sandy Hall, Grayson Hall, Madilyn Allison and Sean Crouch. She is also survived by her sister-in-law Vergie Walls of Gastonia, nieces and nephews, and several special friends, including Danny Parton who called her "Mom" and adopted family member Kate Welch. The family expresses much appreciation to those at Mountain View Manor who gave her not only physical assistance but kind words, hugs and big smiles and to Jodi Kesselring who came as a caretaker and leaves as a devoted friend. Visitation was held at Crisp Funeral Home on Sunday, September 10, and graveside services at 11:00 a.m. on Monday at Swain Memorial Park. "Those who gave our lives beauty live forever in our hearts."
