With great sadness I learned a couple days ago of Ted's passing. I, my wife (Becky), and friend (John Ruhr), will all sorely miss him. Ted and his family all became good friends to us as we worked at the Osier railroad townsite in Colorado for the Friends of the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad (C&TS RR). I started working with Ted and the Friends of the C&TSRR in 1996. I didn't know what I was getting into, but Ted as our Crew Chief made me and the work very comfortable. I earned my Square Nail Badge and kept coming back. I am very proud to be part of his crew and always will be. If it wasn't for Ted I don't know if I would have kept coming back. It now has been over 25 years since I've worked as an active member with the Friends because of knowing Ted and his dedication to the C&TS RR. We were also fortunate to get to know Nancy, Stacia, Kyle, Chris, John, Julie and Andrew during the work sessions. I'll always remember the AM Safety meeting at the start of the week. Ted would say, "be safe and use common sense." The Square Nail Gang had a very good safety record. Another thing Ted would say at camp, "give only complements to the cook" ( Nancy). I'll always remember Nancy's camp dinners. They were the best and so tasty. Ted and his family became part of our lives and we'll always have fond memories of him.

On behalf of my late husband, Gary McCrimmon, who shared with me many childhood stories of his adventures with Johnny and his older brother Teddy, I offer deepest condolences from the McCrimmon family for your loss. After watching the family video it is clear what an amazing life Ted had and how blessed he was with such a loving family. My heart is filled with memories and with sorrow for Nancy and Stacy and Kyle and Chris and John and Andrew and all of Ted’s countless many friends… Everywhere! He touched so many hearts and inspired so many minds! Oh my gosh there was no one quite like Teddy and never will be.… My memory goes back many many years. I’d like to share it here.
My cousin Teddy and I were nine months apart in age. My mom Anna and I spent a lot of time with my aunt Marie Norcross and my uncle Ted Norcross after my dad passed away when I was 10 years old. I had no brothers or sisters so Teddy became sort of my “big brother“. We had a lot of fun together growing up. But sometimes he would tease me mercilessly, yet always with a twinkle in his eye. I believe to this day he imported in me and inner strength that surfaces within me Whenever called upon.
I never for gave him though for the time that he and his best friend whose name I believe was “Hawkins“ took me along with them on a walk down the ally behind the houses on NW. 92nd St., where they lived In Miami Shores. The ally was where everyone kept their trash cans. It was around the Fourth of July as I recall and Teddy and his friend were mischievously putting fire crackers and little cherry bombs in the trash cans, carefully setting the lids back on. So all along the way it was “boom boom bang boom…“ Some of the lids actually flew off… One of the neighbors called the police and in the next instant there I was standing all by myself with my pockets filled with cherry bombs and fire crackers while Teddy and his friend took off like a rocket. And there I was standing with pockets filled With cherry bombs while they were giggling away in the distance. The police just sort of stared at me in disbelief and I almost wanted to cry, but I didn’t! I never for gave him for doing that…
Yes, Teddy had a unique sense of humor but it was always bundled together with his amazing heart of gold.
I learned so much from him. His creativity and sense of adventure inspired me to be brave and to always try my best. What a blessing he was to me even though I did not realize it at the time I see it clearly now.
Teddy was a unique human being..genius I do believe. There was almost nothing that he could not do, or create, or dream up. Teddy was skilled in so many ways and was always doing things with a gigantic sense of adventure. He forever inspired me as I am sure he did countless others. Oh how I will miss my beloved cousin. How I long still to sit and talk with him about living off the earth..root cellars...the latest on his railroad project.. looking at his amazing scale drawings of bridges and countless other things. He was so gifted! and he knew all about the steel mills in Cleveland, going there with his dad, studying every detail. He loved life and everything in it.
When I looked at Ted in later years I saw clearly in his face the two human beings that gave him life… My beloved aunt Marie and my uncle Ted Norcross. Truly he reflected The unique qualities of both of these loving parents… My uncle Ted the amazing World War II captain..The epitome of courage and strength and discipline, and always with steadfastness and determination. All of that combined with the tenderness of my sweet and loving aunt Marie the embodiment of world heritage from her upbringing in a large Cleveland family filled with love of God and the qualities of kindness and love and with what truly matters in life.
… And oh how they loved one another! Their love story could be a movie in itself.… And from that amazing union came a one of a kind cousin, Teddy Norcross. What a beautiful family Teddy and Nancy raised! Each one of them a shining tribute to their parents and within each of then is the courage and uniqueness that will carry them through life as nothing else could..
Oh how I wish I could sit down with him just one more time to share and laugh and remember. Maybe I would even forgive him for those firecrackers in my pockets....
..Eternal Memory my beloved cousin Teddy Norcross..Forever and ever. There was no one ever quite like you and I don’t believe there ever will be. I will miss you forever. XOXO Sandie
... I forgot to add some thing very important. Back then, Teddy was never called “Teddy”, but rather,“Punky”! I am not exactly sure how that came about, but as time went on it faded away… still, now... I can hear the echoes of “Punky”.. and it takes me right back to a place I wish I were at this very moment.. Memories of the heart are forever.❤️

We can’t express enough as to how much Ted meant to us. Our family has so many great memories that we will forever cherish in our hearts. It will be so hard for us to sit out on our porch without seeing Ted riding in his John Deere up/down the mountain during his daily routine. I think I can speak for everyone in saying - The mountain will never be the same without our friend Ted, who always seemed like family to us...... Nancy and family, it is with great sadness that I write this message. My family and I have known Ted and you for over 45 years and in that time, Ted has been a helper, a guide, a mentor, and a friend. He was always ready to give advice, lend a hand, or offer a tool to help with a project I was working on. He was also a blessing to my mother and father over the years and to the whole Stecoah community.
I am glad I got to spend time with Ted and you in October but I will miss him greatly. I always loved how independent and resourceful he was. There was nothing Ted couldn't do and if by some chance there was, he would just figure it out and get it done anyway. I loved how I could always find him in his garage listening to the radio at lunch time and I thought it was funny how when we parted company, he would sometimes say, "I'm glad you got to see me."
As suggested, I have made a donation to the Stecoah Valley Center and trust that he will be remembered there for many years to come.
