Mrs. Douthit was one of my teachers at Swain County High School. It made my heart swell when I read Ms Mary Stiles tribute. I, too, have experienced having a the opportunity to work with former students . It makes one so proud that maybe you had some influence with their career choice. Mrs. Douthit, no doubt, influenced many young people’s lives. She was a true professional and a true lady. I wish there were more teachers like Mrs Douthit in the profession today.
My condolences to her son and extended family. It’s wonderful that you had her in your life for the number of years she was blessed to have.
Fondly and Sincerely,
Connie Allen (class of 1983)

Jonathan and members of Jean's extended family. I previously posted personal condolences but members of the Swain High Class of 1960 have asked me to offer the sympathy and support of the entire class. Jean attended our 50th class reunion in 2010 and was not only a source of joy to everyone who attended; she seemed to enjoy the event a great deal on her own. Her patience, kindness, steady influence in the classroom (and beyond) was a shaping factor for many of us. She was the faculty sponsor for the student marshals and, much more significantly, the high school annual, "The Ridgerunner." The latter duty meant, in effect, that she did a great deal of the work, not to mention providing constant direction and wisdom, on the publication. As is true with every class, the yearbook is something to be treasured and pulled out for moments of fond reminiscence from time to time. Jean Douthit made it happen for our class.
She was a role model and a devoted teacher. But maybe a classmate put it in speaking of her passing: "She was a good one."
Hail and fond farewell Jean, from the Class of 1960, whose members greatly admired you.

Mrs. Douthit (before she became Jean to me) was my high school business teacher, later a fellow teacher and mentor, and then a beloved friend of many years. She guided me through the expectations for the yearbook sponsor before that role was passed on to me. She was an outstanding teacher. My sister, who became a business teacher, always gave Jean much recognition for her educational influence saying, "She was the best teacher I ever had." I am thankful for having had her in my life and treasure the memories. Jonathan-everyone of Jean's family, sadness is natural but what joy in knowing Jean's eternal home.

Mrs. South it was one of my favorite teachers. She tried to teach me typing with not a lot of success. My fingers just wouldn't cooperate. She would pat my shoulder, shake her head and walk away. She had more patience than anyone I ever knew. She was always so sweet and kind to everyone she met. I will always remember her sweet smile. Rest in peace Mrs. Douthit you have earned your peace.

Jonathan and all members of Jean's family--I join you in sorrow at the loss of a wonderful woman. I was fortunate enough to take typing under her while a student at Swain High, and as I told her on many occasions, it turned out to be the most important of all my high school classes (never mind that I took a second year simply because I was interested in a girl in the class). Typing has served me wonderfully well over all the ensuing decades, and I have her to thank for it. She was a gifted teacher, but more than that, she was a caring one.
She was also someone who gave back to the community in many ways including stellar membership in Bryson City Presbyterian Church, as a staunch supporter of education, and as a most meaningful member of Friends of the Bryson City Cemetery.
It was always a joy to see her over the years--at their Deep Creek home when Claude was still alive and I'd be walking along the road back to my vehicle after fishing the state water portion of the stream, when I accompanied Daddy to church in his later years, and especially at meetings of the FBCC or at occasional talks I gave in the area.
She exemplified what it means to be a devoted teacher, an outstanding citizen, and a genuinely good person. I'm a better individual for having known her.
