I have known Mama Gene all my life and she always asked about my family every time I saw her. She will be sorely missed and my heart goes out to her children, grandchildren and sisters and brother.

I got to know Mamma Jean through my G-Grandparents, Amy and Ted Roberts. She had a big smile and bigger laugh every time you saw her...but she could be an intimidating figure if you did not behave yourself and take care of each other! We remember her and mourn the loss of a true lover of her people!

We are saddened to learn of Moma Gene's passing. She will surely be missed by so many people that she has known and befriended during the years. We have known her for so long, and know of her kindness to so many. I worked
in Cherokee for a long number of years and all knew and loved Gene. We lived
next door to her near Bryson City many years ago. I believe she was working
at Swain Hospital at that time.

To the Family and Friends of Momma Gene:
I offer to you with all of my heart a prayer of peace. I first met Momma Gene when she was living with Uncle Goingback (GB) and Mary U.Chiltoskey, back in 1986. I trained in my traditional culture and medicine with Momma Gene for the first year and then she sent me to Crosslin F. Smith, in the Cherokee Nation to continue my training. She took me in, fed me, gave me a place to sleep, had me join in with her family, and then called me her own, and I called her mine. Over the years we have still been together and I am so fortunate to have know and loved this woman. She will live forever in my heart and in my soul and through my medicine. Thanks Momma Gene for believing in me. All my love Jody
