Edna,
Gloria and I are friends of June and Carl Hollman; you may rember us. We were sorry to hear about John and extend our deepest sympathy to you and your children. We especially remember you because in 1980 we visited Cherokee and were thrilled to encounter a photo exhibit of Shan's at the visitor center.

Edna:
I heard from Lex Morrissey this morning about John's passing. It brought back a flood of memories about John and his sheparding of a very green young researcher through the maize of the Edgewood Labs. His skill, experience, sense of humor, and most of all, patience were never failing. His contributions to the success of our work were immense and too often unsung. Whenever we got discouraged, John brought us back. It was always evident that he had seen and prevailed over worse. He brought a sense of joy and accomplishment to all that he did. Being cooped up with him for four years in a very dingy, dank and crumbling Bldg 5685 is one of my most treasured experiences.
Like too many friends, the separation of time and distance took its toll, but he is always a part of what we did and continue to do. May he know peace and may God bless you and your family.

May you find comfort in your husdand's and fathers memories, and strength in the companionship of the life you shared together. Your tears are not unnoticed by the Creator of Life and I certainly hope that the help God can give at this time will make a difference. Although I have not personally met the family I pray the tender mercy that God has always shown be with you now so you will know that you are not alone and may the prayers of others help in some small way to bring you strength and comfort and courage each day. Soon He will actually swallow up death forever, and the Sovereign Lord will certainly wipe the tears from all faces Isaiah 25:8

Dear Edna,
I was so sorry to hear of John's death. It was only a few weeks ago that I talked to you at length in the grocery store about his illness. John was one of the nicest men I've ever known, and I know he will be missed by many people. I will not be able to attend the memorial service due to a prior commitment, but please know that all of you are in our thoughts and prayers.
