He stood about 5 feet 7 inches, weighing in at 130 pounds. He was tall and lanky, often joked with that a strong wind would blow him over, so he’d better have rocks in his pockets. He was easy to find in the tall, lush corn he planted every spring. All you had to do was stand still and listen. The wind would soon carry the sound of his whistle, a little tune said to be a line in an old Ralph Stanley song. It was the same tune repeatedly. We, as children growing up in the holler, knew that tune by heart, and it’s forever embedded in our memory alongside the old familiar words when you finally found him: “Hey, whatcha doing?” He would grin with his head cocked sideways and one eye half-closed, laughing at you, and would say, “Ahh, you know, just swarping about.” Sometimes his reply was, “Just sanering around.” There wasn’t a kid in our holler that didn’t receive a .22 shooting lesson from him. He was with us when we killed our first squirrel or not far behind to congratulate us when he heard the shot. We all knew what “sang” was, and I can assure you, it had nothing to do with the church choir. Chances are, if you dipped, he was the first to give you some Skoal. Each spring, he and old Fred would pick us up at the poplar tree beside E’s driveway, give us a dip of Skoal, and we would ride around on a pallet made of wood to help level out the soil. When our job was done flattening the ground, he’d say, “Spit that out and rinse your mouth at the spring and don’t tell your mommy.” You can bet good money he had his cornbread and milk with a big slice of sweet onion if you showed up at dinner time, and for dessert, a Little Debbie and a Mt. Dew. I can still see the speckled thick-lipped coffee cup he drank his strong black coffee out of every morning. He was always dressed sharp as a tack, and you would often catch him in his dress shoes hoeing corn or feeding the livestock. He was a logger, farmer, the best grave digger that ever was, and one of the best referees for a group of roughens Alarka ever had! He loved us crazy kids so much that he entertained a funeral and dug the doggie's grave for it. You haven’t lived until you’ve held a Southern Baptist funeral for a “cotton-picking chicken-killing dawg,” as he called it. You could set your watch to see him while he made his afternoon rounds to see if we were all alright. After supper, he came up the hill to see us, then down the trail by the cornfield and fence, stopping to pet ole Trigger on his way to Aunt Kathy’s. Later on, he visited Aunt Lesa, and later he added E’s house to the rounds. He was born on September 15th, 1927, to Willie and Katie Bowers. His given name was Walter Edison Bowers. In his 96 years on this earth, he was called son, husband, Walt, Dad, uncle, Moose, Moss, and friend. We called him Paw. So if you know it, (insert tune here) Also , I’ve got $20 says first thing granny said was “did you get them taters planted Walt?” Rest easy, Lil Paw. Thanks for the memories….

Kathy and the rest of the family,
You will all be remembered in our prayers. Mr. Bowers was a kind and caring friend to so many. My family considered both Mr. and Mrs. Bowers as special people to all.
